History
The D models were introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955. They caused a stir amongst visitors but also a certain amount of bewilderment as the avantgarde design with a wealth of technical innovations was simply sensational. The D model was the first time that a central hydraulic system had been used in a production vehicle for the suspension, steering, clutch and brakes. The standard version, known as the DS, was supplemented by a simpler variant, the ID. Citroen used a play on words when naming its vehicles. “DS” is pronounced in French as “Déesse” (goddess); “ID” is pronounced as “Idée” (idea).
The Citroen DS was in production for just under 20 years. In total, almost 1.5 million vehicles were built.

The Déesse lived up to her name. She was an absolute dream to drive and be driven in. Where ever we went, people would smile at us and sometimes even wave! We felt like royalty ourselves. Taking out my Dad in this car rejuvenated him and nothing could stop him smiling all day!

What a wonderful experience with Madeleine. A majestic car which gives regal ride of a Rollls Royce but with more charm. Rent a Classic staff were excellent as usual, uncomplicated, friendly and there to make sure your classic car experience is something to remember. Anyone looking to have a few days touring the roads of Switzerland and to do it in style this is the way. I look forward to our next adventure with RAC, one negative, its difficult to choose which car to take as there is such a choice, oh well, we will work our way through them, thanks RAC!
